Main economic activities include crop production and animal husbandry, petty businesses and employment in the Government and private sectors.
AGRICULTURE
As mentioned earlier 85% of the population depends on agriculture for their livelihood. Main crops produced are maize, beans, bananas, coffee, and cassava.

In reviving the coffee crop the district has embarked in producing coffee varieties which are resistant to Coffee wilt disease in collaboration with Maruku Agricultural Research Institute.
There are 14 nursery plots in the district producing new improved banana suckers.

TRANSPORTATION AND COMMUNICATION WAYS
a) ROAD WAYS
The District has a roads network totaling 839Kms. All roads are passable throughout the year. The roads are in four categories as follows:
Gravel roads (TANROADS) 236 Kms.
Tarmac roads (TANROADS) 38 Kms.
Gravel roads (DC) 224 Kms.
Earth roads (DC) 263 Kms.
Other roads 78 Kms
Total Road in Kms 839 Kms
b) WATER WAYS
Bukoba has one Marine ship which operates between Mwanza and Bukoba thrice a week. It’s one of the most preferred means of transport by common people in the district.
c) AIR WAYS
For easy access to other regions in the country especially Mwanza and Dar es Salaam, Bukoba has one Airport which accommodates small airplanes that operates between Mwanza and Bukoba daily.
d) TELEPHONE:
Landline telephone service is available in some parts of the district, maily in division centers, Mobile phone services (Vodacom, Tigo, Zantel and Zain) all over the District and this makes communication easier.
e) WATER SUPPLY
The district has 4 gravity water schemes, 161 shallow wells, 1 deep well, 4 charcoal dams, 137 springs, which serves about 146,400 people which is equal to 54% of the districts total population. The target of the project is that by the year 2013 all 92 villages should have safe and clean water within a range of 400m from each household as speculated in the Water Policy of 2002.
f) ELECTRICITY
The District has been supplied with Hydroelectricity from Uganda where by only 2% of the District is covered. Currently there is a major projects on progress for Bukoba Rural Electrification under REA (Rural Energy Agency of Tanzania) whereby we expect after the completion of the projects more than 45% of rural areas will be electrified.
